Exhibited in Penti Menti, a solo show by delaney maitland

My art reflects the process of seeing a subject. My paintings are a fine dance between specificity and generalization, between intense observation and fleeting whims. I am drawn to complex subjects with lots of linearity. Juxtaposing areas of gesture and impressionistic mark making with more fully realized parts manages the complexity of my subject matter and manipulates traditional representation. I aim to create a paint surface that becomes the primary focus, allowing the eyes to slowly unwind the scene.

My work focuses on the painting process. Layered marks in various mediums and application methods give my paintings history. Alterations in color, value, and placement show how the painting changes as it develops. Each piece is a collection of tiny changes that results in a final image. This focus on process and eventual culmination also lends itself to a loose conceptual idea: change and continuity. This phenomenon is used to study history; it is best defined as the ability to understand continual change by comparing different points in time.
