DELANEY MAITLAND
Exhibited in Experiments in Style, a solo show by delaney maitland
This series of work aims to bend the expectation present upon viewing a figure painting. I use colors that lay outside of our idea of “flesh-toned” while maintaining believable lights and shadows.
As much as I seek out subject matters that captivate me, it is the paint application that I find more satisfaction in. I use exaggerated local color in a thick, blocky technique to highlight these qualities. Alla Prima “all at once” studies are my favorite way to work, because they allow for exciting color interactions and textures that can be lost when working over longer periods. Although I exaggerate local color, it still aligns with what I see. I’ve found that staring at an object long enough breaks down the hue, revealing vibrancy that is absurdly exciting. Finding unexpected color, especially when revealed by light, is what draws me to my subject matter
